I Reminisce, I Reminisce

G. Dep feat. P. Diddy & Black Rob – “Let’s Get It”

Sometimes while enjoying some barbecue chicken and the latest episode of Contender, I think about the good old days. Do any of the fellas out there remember those junior high school days when you’d pinch a girl’s butt, and not catch a sexual harassment charge? When a slap in the face, detention and a phone call home resulting in further ass-whoopin’ were punishment enough for boyish stupidity? The years of yesterday’s yonder… yeah! They’re gone now. And today’s hot wings aren’t taking me that far back, just to my high school days. I remember around 1999-2001 when one of the most exciting activities my crew and I engaged in was Getting Crazy. No, I don’t mean chasing down your schitzo-maniac cousin. I’m talking about the New York City dance phenomenon that was later renamed “The Harlem Shake” or “The Uptown” if you were from Brooklyn. TRUST, we were sick with ours.

Bonafide shoulder shimmy starters were songs like P. Diddy & The Family’s “The Benjamins”, “Do It Again” by President Carter, “Whoa” by Black Rob, “Put Your Hands Up” by Jadakiss and a couple of Fabolous songs whose titles evade me at the moment. But for real though, no song got cats more hype up in the bash than G. Dep’s banger, “Let’s Get It.” From Inwood Manor, to the Key, all the way out to Amazura teen night, it was definitely ON when this song dropped, and anyone who was from Harlem World (or rolled with Uptown Juvies) was in the place. Now the dancers in the above video, besides homegirl from Untouchable Shorties, weren’t as ill wit it as the one’s from Eve’s joint, but wasn’t no dude tryin’ to go in while “Who’s That Girl” was on. Wear it if it fit’cha! and enjoy the clip.
