Parasite

gene

So – the friday after thanksgiving, I almost went to Santos (where Questlove was guest dj-ing for the night) but I opted to stay in. The next day, I somehow through procrastination/random series of clickage, came across the Nardwaur interview with Questlove where in the last part they discuss a record by Eugene McDaniels entitled Headless Heroes of The Apocalypse. Now apparently the song “Parasite” and the project as a whole stirred up so much shit in the 70′s it practically got homie blackballed from the industry. According to Quest though he still managed to make a nice living writing for folks like Roberta Flack.

Anyway, decided to include the album cover art up top, something that’s rare for this site as you may know, mostly because of how damn scary it looks – especially for a record that is widely labeled as soul/funk/jazz. You think of those genres + the era, you think of a more deadpan slash color muted grainy version of Aziz Ansari’s hilarious artwork. Instead you get a crazy looking screaming dude, samurai warriors, (and what one assumes to be) hellfire, all framed by the hue of deep red and the cheery, uplifting text of the title.

Now given the content of “Parasite”, which chronicles the friendly interaction between native americans and pilgrims, and which Questlove says he plays during his gigs after Thanksgiving, I shoulda took my ass to Santos.
